The photos on the cover were taken by Red Crayola co-founder Frederick Barthelme. They appeared previously in Barthelme's book Rangoon (illustrated by Mayo Thompson) in a chapter titled "The Chair". The cover of Soldier-Talk features a similar grid of photos.

Part studio, part live, Three Songs has a muzzy rambunctiousness that is lacking in its immediate precursors. It is the trippiest Red Crayola side since the International Artists days. Not that you'd think it originated then. Allen Ravenstine's synth bloobles and Jesse Chamberlain's wrist-snapping are a far cry from the smudge pyros of the Familiar Ugly.
