Berkeley Barb
July 21, 1967[1]
Ed Denson
[...] To further follow their fortunes, John Fahey played with [the Red Crayola] at one concert at the [Berkeley Folk] Festival. Now, there are some clubs on the make for audiences down on San Pablo - the Zodiac, the Steppenwolf, and the New Orleans House come to mind - and the New Orleans House got a hold of John and asked him to play. He said he would if his friends the Red Crayola could also.
So it happened Sunday night, and sure enough everyone left, the Management asked the Crayola not to play the second set. They didn't. John made 12.75, the Crayola $10. So much for the state of the arts in Berkeley, huh gang.
Actually what can you say. Anyone who invites an artist to perform should be willing to offer them more than $10 or $22.75 for that matter, for their time. They counter, and for all I know quite truthfully, that they are very poor also and the only hope is for all the artists and club owners to work together. I don't believe it.
All of these places go broke, right? Even the Jabberwock which has lived a charmed life because the people who worked there were willing to work for virtually nothing finally went broke.
One of the reasons that they go broke is because no one comes to hear whoever is playing there. No one comes because no one interesting ever plays there for the most part. No one interesting comes because they can't get paid, and there is no audience.
I think the answer is for the artists to demand that they be paid. Paid like $50 a night, each. Then the club owners can demand that they get a decent performance. And they'll have to do good publicity. Or else lose money. And then an audience will develop, if there is one at all. And everyone'll be real happy. Maybe.

When we were in town that night John asked us to open for him at the New Orleans House in Berkeley, CA in July 1967. The promoter asked us to stop playing and gave us 10 dollars because we were turning people away. He begged us.
