Exile Osaka
1995[1]
[...] Mayo Thompson is the leader of 60's psychedelic sensations, Red Krayola, who are considered to be one of the pioneers of the lo-fi movement. Thompson, who also did a stint in Pere Ubu, has had his songs covered by Galaxie 500 and Spaceman 3, among others. After jumping around from label to label, Thompson has finally found a home on the fine roster of artists on the always reliable Drag City label.
These series of solo performances came as a surprise in the Kansai area. Thompson was originally just supposed to play some shows in Tokyo with Red Krayola, and the live appearances in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto were organized at the last minute. (The price of the Kyoto show was only ¥800).
Thompson came out looking like a hip college professor--the kind who invites students to come over to drink a few beers and listen to Velvet Underground bootlegs.
My favorite songs of the evening were "Worried Worried" and "Old Tom Clark." Towards the end of the set, Thompson was joined by Yamamoto Seiichi for a stunning collaboration of psychedelic white noise. (Hope that someone releases a live album of these shows.)
[...] Not having cared for Ghost, it wasn't at all surprising when headliners Marble Sheep churned out more of the same hippy feel good drivel. The only relief came when Mayo Thompson joined the band onstage for a rendition of "Willie and the Hand Jive."

2021[2]
2024[3]
After the Tokyo show, Dr. Mayo went on a solo tour to the west, carrying a soft case with an electric guitar in it. On the day of the Kobe concert, he came to the office where I was working at the time. My mission was to copy the texts and keep an eye on the guitar during lunch.
