- Summer 1966: Mayo Thompson and Frederick Barthelme work together on a film project. They decide to abandon the unfinished film and form a band, The Red Crayola.
- September 1966: The Red Crayola adds Steve Cunningham (bass), Bonnie Emerson (guitar), and Danny Schacht (harmonica) to their line-up.
- September 1966: The group consolidates into the trio of Mayo Thompson (guitar, vocals), Frederick Barthelme (drums), Steve Cunningham (bass).
- Late 1966-1967: The Red Crayola play shows in and around Houston, Texas.
1967
- February 1967: The band's first recording session results in unreleased single Dairymaid's Lament
- March 1967: Following a performance in the KNUZ Battle of the Bands, The Red Crayola signs to independent label International Artists
